Product Profile
---------------
Jarrow Formulas GPLC (glycine propionyl-L-carnitine) is a
patented propionyl ester of L-carnitine introduced in conjunction
with Sigma-Tau Science. Distinct from other forms of
L-carnitine, clinical research has elucidated the unique effects
of propionyl-L-carnitine for cardiovascular .* In fact
propionyl-L-carnitine was only used by physicians until recently.
The medical writer Stephen T. Sinatra, M. D. in his book, The
Sinatra Solution: c Cardiology (2005), describes in
detail why propionyl-L-carnitine is particularly useful in
supporting heart , especially when supplemented in
conjunction with coenzyme Q10.* More recently, GPLC was found to
increase important exercise parameters that indicate increased
blood flow to muscle tissue.*
GPLC Starts With L-Carnitine
----------------------------
The benefits of GPLC start with L-carnitine. In the body
L-carnitine works with the enzyme carnitine transferase to
shuttle ty s into the mitochondria and to remove waste
afterwards. s are the preferred source of fuel for muscles,
including heart muscle. In this way, GPLC supports energy
production in heart muscle.* L-carnitine has also been shown to
be useful for improving arterial blood flow.*

GPLC: What Is Propionyl-L-Carnitine?
------------------------------------
The effects of GPLC extend beyond that of mere L-carnitine. In
fact,propionyl-L-carnitine (PLC), a patented propionyl ester of
L-carnitine, has undergone many clinical studies. PLC has been
documented to increase the oxidation of both glucose and lactate,
increase exercise capacity, and increase both mental and overall
energy.* PLC also appears to improve muscle glycogen stores while
increasing the time to develop muscular igue.* And PLC used in
conjunction with CoQ10 seems particularly beneficial for heart
.* Compared with at least one other form of L-carnitine,
PLC appears to produce greater increases in cellular L-carnitine
concentrations. Researchers believe that PLC is transported more
easily into muscle tissues and supports energy production,
perhaps because it increases the flow of pyruvate into the Krebs
cycle.* The Krebs cycle is a major component in the body’s energy
pathways. Various intermediate products of the Krebs cycle have
special roles in physiology and energy production. Supplemental
L-carnitine taps into this pathway and is associated with
significantly higher concentrations of pyruvate, ATP and creatine
phosphate (crucial components in energy production) in portions
of the heart muscle during conditions of extreme stress.*
Nitric Oxide: A Key To GPLC
---------------------------
Nitric Oxide (NO) is a messenger utilized by the body to signal
the smooth muscle surrounding blood vessels to relax, allowing
the vessels to widen and causing increased blood flow. Exercise
enthusiasts make attempts to bolster NO effects like improved
blood-flow, increased muscle endurance and more efficient
post-workout recovery by supplementing with bio
precursors of NO, like L-arginine. GPLC research suggests that
its effects on NO production in the body may be how it mediates
its cardiovascular and sports tion effects.* Recent studies
conducted by Dr. Bloomer at the University of Memphis have found
that a daily oral dosage of 4.5 grams of GPLC increases blood
levels of NOx. NOx is a measure of nitric oxide tes in
the blood.* In one double-blind study, men and women who were not
previously exercise-trained were randomly assigned to take either
placebo or GPLC in conjunction with aerobic exercise for eight
weeks. The group administered 4.5 grams/day of GPLC had a
statistically significant increase in blood-levels of NOx. This
study gives evidence to support a GPLC induced increase in
resting NO levels.* In a second double-blind study, the effects
of 4.5 grams/day GPLC versus placebo were evaluated in
resistance-trained men. After four weeks of placebo or GPLC use,
blood levels of NOx were measured following forearm exercise. The
GPLC group showed significant increases in NOx levels at three
and ten minutes post protocol. This study may indicate enhanced
blood flow due to a GPLC induced increase in active NO levels.*
