Crewel & Surface Embroidery: Inspirational Floral Designs (Milner Craft Series)

First section covers materials and equipment. Techniques and tips and a stitch glossary. This is well illustrated and especially good on long and short stitch. The next section explains how to embroider some of the background motifs. Then come a few pages explaining how to work some motifs step by step before getting into the patterns. The largest part of the book is on the 17 projects which are grouped into level of difficulty. There are 7 beginner level, 5 intermediate and 5 advanced level. Each project has a color picture in the full size, followed by the design which can be traced, list of threads, another diagram with stitch directions, another color illustraion with numbers which lead to the colors and stitches and finally a long section called method with very detailed working instructions. That is really more than enough to succeed. My only problem is that I need to enlarge each project but again, she also explains that too. So t his is a very complete thorough guide to crewel flower embroidery and I have never seen such completeness in a crewel book before. If you do flower embroidery and/or crewel embroidery, don't miss this book.

Easy directions

Bought this originally for my daughter-in-law, but I'm getting one for **me** I am a traditional embroiderer -- wool was for crewel or needlepoint, cotton was for everything else (only because you had to be rich to use silk!). Never in my wildest dreams would it have occurred to me to use wool **and** cotton **and** silk in the same piece!! This book had fabulous tips and a wonderful introduction where she imparts much wisdom. If you duplicate these pieces as she did them, be aware that it won't be inexpensive! But they will be glorious!! Whether you are new to surface embroidery, you consider yourself to be a serious embroiderer ... or any point in between, this is the book for you.

Trish Burr does a beautiful job on all her books. You can not go wrong having them for inspiration. I teach needle painting and always looking for her books. This one is on Crewel but you can use the same needle work with 1 thread for needle painting. Each student buys her book and love them.

I’ve completed several of the designs in the book and they all turned out beautifully. I live in a large city so it wasn’t an issue for me, but there are many exotic threads that may be hard to get without ordering. However, the look of the projects with all the different threads is lovely. There are lots of textures, weights, shiny, dull etc and it is really interesting to look at and I’m happy with what I did. I learned combinations of threads I wouldn’t have thought of. However, I’m knocking off a star because the book really needs an editor. There are many errors and inconsistencies once you start doing the projects. Every single project I’ve done has multiple errors. Some illustrations are labeled incorrectly, or in numerous places the wrong thread is listed. The shortcut initials used for the brand names are inconsistent or wrong. Also, the way they list the threads to use in the directions, it is very difficult to read. They use a light font, and you mostly use two threads together that are only separated by a comma and are listed out in paragraph form. I had to put boxes around them so I could reference them easier. Honestly, I was really surprised by the numbers of errors and inconsistencies. It’s like no one proof read it before it went to print. Despite that, the projects are pretty and I made it work.

Beautiful floral designs for beginner, intermediate & accomplished embroiderers. Especially good for perfecting long-short stitch--thread painting

It's great for those who need to learn more embroidery techniques, it has explanations and illustrations. Just the Amazon's careful to the books should be better, because all of them (I bought 4 different titles) arrived with the corner kneaded.

Book what wanted well detailed

Fabulous collection of beautiful thread painted designs from the amazing designer Trish Burr. Once again she has produced a book in which the instructions, photos and diagrams are simply wonderful. I just love her books, and the designs are just beautiful. I will end up with all her books in the very near future if my wishes come true. Definitely recommended if you want to learn how to do this amazing form of embroidery. Beautifully wrapped so that they arrived safely, and in very good time.
