I wear size 9 wide walking shoes, what size should I purchased?

Get the size 9. These were accurate to my feet. If you are 8 get and 8 etc. These are good shoes and they can be adjusted at the HEEL, the INSTEP, and the WIDTH of the foot with small stretch bungees. In fact, I purchased 2 of these because the price is very good also.

Are the insoles hard or squishy?

They're not hard. They are very comfortable. If you push on the sole, it does give but hesitant to say it's squishy. If you push your finger or thumb into it, it will give a 1/4 inch or so. They're great for bicycling or hiking. Traveling to Asia 8n a few days and I van assure you, these will be worn 95% of the time. They are not formal shoes but almost every other scenario, they will more than suffice. They're holding up really well so far as I've had no issues beyond a single rock getting in my shoe the other day.
