Product Description ------------------- Aedes Bodiam Castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, supposedly at the request of Richard II, in order to defend the environs of the French invasion. However, recent research suggests that the castle was built to look like, rather than being built as an effective defence. There is evidence supporting the investigation, such as that the walls of the castle are only a few feet thick. The castle is surrounded by a moat spring-fed, north and south. The castle itself is rectangular in shape, being longer on the south and north sides, and has large circular towers at all corners, and a square tower to defend the centre on each side. The castle stays are in one of the corner towers and the chapel in another. The castle is a typical example of the later medieval castles, since much of the attention was fixed on comfortable dwellings, and as such its value as a fortress has been in doubt. Although the moat is a good barrier, the walls of the castle are not very thick, and there is only one line of defence (unlike a concentric castle). When it was built, the first s were being used, but the castles remained valuable as a base for troops, even if they were increasingly vulnerable to direct attacks. At the time of its construction, England and France were fighting in The Hundred Years War since 1337. The south coast of England, where the castle was to be built, was a constant threat due to the possible French invasion. The castle defended the high part of a river that was navigable as far as possible in medieval times, when the sea level was high. However, such invasion never came, and Bodiam was never the scene of a medieval siege. During the centuries after its construction, the castle was owned by powerful families of Sussex, including the Lewknor family and Levett family, due to which the road in front of the castle takes its name.
